When have you tasted fruit that so excited your taste buds that it inspired you? Fruit picked right from the tree is a delectable experience. In the documentary, The Fruit Hunters, guardians of exotic fruit travel the world to find and protect fruit plants. About half-way through the film, one of the guardians made a comment along the lines of “when was the last time you tasted fruit from the supermarket that inspired you?”

That comment gave me pause. It made me think about the purpose of eating fruits, or any food that has no taste, and doesn’t inspire me. Not to mention the money spent on tasteless foods.

These fruit hunters are adventurers, detectives, and guardians all in one.  They travel across culture, history and geography to show how intertwined we are with the fruits we eat. “Movie star Bill Pullman’s obsession leads him on a crusade to create a community orchard in the Hollywood Hills. Adventurers Noris Ledesma and Richard Campbell scour the jungle for rare mangos, hoping to intervene before the plants are steamrolled by industrialization. Pioneering scientist Juan Aguilar races to breed bananas resistant to a deadly fungus that threatens the worldwide crop. And fruit detectives including Isabella Dalla Ragione investigate Renaissance-era paintings for clues, hoping to rediscover lost fruits. And, of course, there are the fruits themselves, presented in all their mouthwatering glory: cherimoyas, ice cream beans, durians and more.”

If you are a fruit hunter, you are a nouri seeker. Nouri for the mind, body and spirit will inspire you. Wow! What a way to think about what we eat!  Watch the movie. You will love it!

Don’t look for food, look for nouri!
